Why Spending Time Apart is Just as Important as Enjoying Time Together

Whether you're just married or if you've been married for years, you cherish spending every free minute you can with your spouse. After all, that's why you picked them! He or she is your best friend, and if you could, you'd never leave their side. It's an incredible feeling to finally find the one you want to be with forever, but like with most situations, sometimes too much of a good thing can be damaging.

You and your partner need to spend time apart too, and some of the reasons why might surprise you. After you evaluate the ideas, it will make more sense. Once you start applying the concepts, your relationship will go to a whole new, healthier, and more profound level.

Be the Person Your Spouse Fell in Love With

When you spend so much time with the same person, it's easy to start behaving in the same manner as they do, and for some, it means meshing together so much that your identity is lost. Your partner fell in love with you when you were uniquely you, and if you start to lose that individuality, it can cause problems that you don't realize are sneaking up in the relationship.

Not only does your partner start to see the changes in you, but you'll also begin to feel them, and it will make you believe as though you're not as important as you once were. Keep your friends, go out and do things alone, and never forget who you are, or your partner may sense as though they've lost you too.

Make Him or Her Miss You for a Little While

Are you always by your spouse's side? You may think that steadily spending time together shows that you're still and love and everything is excellent. It can actually mean that one or both of you is feeling insecure. You need to get away from each other, even if it's for a couple of hours a few times a week. Go out and take a walk, visit with family, or take a drive and listen to your favorite tunes without worrying about what your husband or wife is up to.

Make sure you discuss the plan and encourage your spouse to do the same. In the long run, you might miss out on spending some time together, but you'll both be happier that you invested some time on your self-care instead of always being each other's support system. What happens as a result? You'll be looking forward to going home and talking about what you did while separated. Not only does it give you something new to discuss, but it can also show you a little more insight into who your spouse is.

Communicate to Find the Perfect Balance

No relationship is flawless, but you can determine where the balance is for spending time apart and time together if you communicate. No two couples will have the same opinions about what amounts of personal time and quality time with their spouse are essential. The most crucial factor is to communicate your expectations with one another.

You might think one night away a week with the girls for a few hours is enough, but your husband may need more time than that. It's a compromise that can only be made if you're open and honest with one another. If you're not sure, start somewhere. After experimenting, you can adjust and find what works best for you as an individual and as a couple.

As long as you allow enough time apart and still look forward to enjoying activities together, your marriage will continue developing and growing into the quality of relationship you've vowed to work towards.
